Die Deutsche Bahn betreibt in mehreren zentralen Umformerwerken frequenzelastische Netzkupplungsumformer bzw. Bahnstromumformer, die das öffentliche dreiphasige 50Hz-Stromnetz der allgemeinen Landesversorgung mit dem einphasigen 16,7Hz-Bahnstromnetz verbinden. Die frequenzelastischen Netzkupplungsumformer bestehen hauptsächlich aus zwei miteinander starr gekoppelten rotierenden elektrischen Maschinen – einem doppeltgespeisten Drehstrom-Asynchronmotor (50Hz) mit einer GTO-Leistungsregelung und einem Einphasen-Synchrongenerator mit Gleichstromerregung. Die Leistung aus dem öffentlichen 50Hz Drehstromnetz wird mittels eines 50Hz-dreiphasen-Transformators von 110kV auf die Betriebsspannung/Maschinenspannung (hier 10,5kV) der Asynchronmaschine herunter und durch einen Einphasen 16,7Hz-einphasen-Transformator auf 110kV hochgespannt. Im Zuge der geplanten Unterwerkserneuerung (16,7 Hz) im Umformerwerk Köln soll der Transformator Uk3 (16,7Hz, 33,3 MVA, ABB) abtransportiert und einer externen Werksrevision unterzogen werden.
